Tips on Finding the Right Contractor for Your Home Improvement Project

There are many reasons why people decide to remodel their home. For starters, it’s a good investment and can lead to great a profit when homeowners are ready to sell their property. By remodeling, homeowners are more likely to have a home that is custom to their needs as opposed to buying a new home. Some homeowners choose to remodel because they think remodeling is fun, while the project can be as little as painting the bathroom for a more relaxing feel or as big as remodeling that outdated kitchen, the outcome can be very rewarding and gives many homeowners the feeling of satisfaction.

Not every homeowner is equipped to take on this project alone, for many homeowners, the idea of remodeling their home can be a nightmare. This is where contractors come into the picture. Let’s face it: hiring a contractor as opposed attempting to do it yourself has its advantages. First and foremost, a contractor offers a higher level or expertise on the subject of remodeling. This is especially helpful when pulling permits with the City Building & Safety Division. Time is an essential factor as well. For larger jobs, contractors are more likely to get the job done much faster than someone who works full time and has set aside weekends to take on their home improvement project. Most importantly, money is a huge deciding factor- the main goal is to get as much bang for your buck without breaking the bank. True, a contractor while charge you for their service, but they will guarantee to do it right, which is a big money saver in the long run.

For many homeowners, deciding which contractor to hire for the project can be a very difficult task. No one wants to hire the guy who started the project, charged thousands, and never came back only after doing half of the work. There are many questions a homeowner should ask when looking for the right contractor:

  • How long have you been in business?
  • Do you have references?
  • Are you licensed, insured and registered with the State?
  • If you will be using subcontractors, are they licensed, insured and registered with the State?
  • Will my project require a permit, if so will you be responsible for pulling and paying for it?
  • Will you require any payment before beginning the work?
  • Will you be providing me with a detailed contract as to the nature of the job, the cost of materials and the cost for labor?

A few tips to consider:

  1. The importance of putting any agreement a homeowner makes with their contractor in writing cannot be stressed enough.
  2. Before any work has begun, make sure you are comfortable with the terms of the agreement.
  3. It is also important to keep in mind that when it comes to home remodeling, there are always things that come up unexpectedly. Be prepared to handle any unexpected costs or issues that come up with your contractor.
  4. Never pay a contractor in full before the project has been completed. Most contractors will not require any payment until at least half of the work has been completed, at which point only a portion of the amount agreed upon is paid, with the remainder to be paid upon completion of the work.

I know this all seems like a lot to have to go through to get that long awaited home remodel project done, but it will all be worth it in the end!
